The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Hampshire is hosting a Grafting and Pruning Workshop on April 6th from 10:00 – 3:00 at the St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH . This workshop is for current and aspiring orchardists with renowned organic apple grower and author, Michael Phillips. His 2012 book, “The Holistic Orchard”, has won many accolades and was named one of the best books in 2012 by the American Horticultural Society. This will be a practical workshop in that you will be taking home a baby tree(s) to nurture into fruitfulness!

Grafting fruit trees involves a sharp knife and the mindset of a surgeon—but don’t let that intimidate you! Michael will guide participants in bench grafting, using the whip-and-tongue union to place a chosen variety on provided rootstock. And, yes, you get to make your own graft and take that baby tree(s) home! We will also head outside to topwork an existing tree using the bark inlay graft. Understanding this technique allows you to create a tree bearing multiple varieties. The practical insights shared in this workshop will launch many fruit adventures ahead. The grafting portion of this workshop will take place between 10:00 and noon.

Early spring is an ideal time to prune fruit trees. Michael will discuss specific horticultural goals to keep in mind when deciding which limbs and shoots to remove. The theory of pruning may sound daunting . . . which is why this workshop takes place at an actual orchard with trees needing attention. You’ll make some pruning decisions of your own under the watchful eye of an experienced fruit grower. By all means, bring your sharpened pruning tools if you have them! The pruning portion of the workshop takes place from 1:00 – 3:00.
